During World War II, the United States Marine Corps recruited approximately 400–420 Navajo men to develop and use a military communications code based on the Navajo language. At the time, Navajo was an unwritten language spoken by fewer than 30 non-Navajo people in the world — making it virtually impossible for enemy forces to decipher.
These men served on the front lines, transmitting critical battlefield information under fire, in conditions that would break most people. They were warriors in every sense of the word — not just for their country, but for their people, their culture, and their identity. 🖤
Their contributions were classified for decades. It wasn't until 1968 that their mission was declassified, and not until 2001 that the original 29 Code Talkers were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal — one of the highest civilian honors in the United States.
